The John Hargate Society

Established in memory of the Rev. John Hargate, a member of the Form of 1861 and of the faculty until his death in 1906, The John Hargate Society honors all those who have taken the special step of including St. Paul’s School in their long-term plans through a bequest provision, life-income gift, or other deferred giving arrangement.

John Hargate spent virtually his entire life at St. Paul’s School, first as a student, and then as a master. He was the School’s first recipient of the “best boy” medal at the closing exercises in 1857. As an athlete, the diminutive John Hargate is remembered for having been one of two oarsmen to win the first crew race in students’ competition, and he was also a consistent contributor to the Isthmian club. With most of his duties as a master involving supervising boys and the administration of finances, never teaching, he is credited with raising funds that helped the School grow and prosper. Noted for his extraordinary honesty and humility, John Hargate was universally admired.

Working to within a month of his death in 1906, John Hargate toiled for nearly fifty years at the School. Bequeathing all of his assets to the School, John Hargate essentially established the endowment of St. Paul’s School. For more than 100 years, this endowment has grown and helped ensure the School’s ability to educate young people of promise. Thank you for your own commitment and support as a member of The John Hargate Society.
